The Designation of Origin and its Regulatory Board are governed by a set of Regulations approved by Navarre Order 376/2008, of 15th July, of the Regional Ministry for Rural Development and the Environment, and which came into force on 1st August 2008.
The principal contents of these regulations are as follows:
- Chapter I. General provisions: legal basis of protection, scope of the protection, competent bodies.
- Chapter II. On production: production zone, authorised grape varieties, growing practices, maximum yields, plantations, wine types and characteristics, wine organoleptic characteristics.
- Chapter III. On wine-making: wine-making practices and transformation efficiency, methodology.
- Chapter IV. On maturing and ageing: maturing and ageing area, indications on maturing and ageing and methods.
- Chapter V. Registers: Regulatory Board Registers and entries, vineyard register, wine-making wineries register, wine storage wineries register, register of wineries performing maturing and ageing, register of bottling wineries, co-existence of wines included and not included in the Designation of Origin, validity of registrations.
- Chapter VI. Rights and obligations: right to use the Navarre Designation of Origin, bottling, labelling, product distribution, obligations of vineyard and winery proprietors.
- Chapter VII. On the Regulatory Board: definition and area of powers, composition, election of members of the board, functions of the Chairperson, Secretary, operation of the Board, personnel , financing, publication of agreements and decisions, system to contest Board decisions.
- Chapter VIII. System of penalties: breach of regulations and penalties.
